Your Club Matters Stories: Jodie's Blog
Hi! My name’s Jodie and this is the first instalment of my Club Matters blog! I’m writing it with the aim of, over time, sharing some of the best bits of the Club Matters site with you.. Club Matters has allowed me to help my club succeed...
But before we start, let me tell you a bit about me... I have been part of my local sports club for as long as I can remember, and more recently I have taken on various roles on our committee. So, what sport? I hear you cry - shall I let you guess? … Many of you will be shocked to hear I am a keen Crown Green Bowler! However, those that have discovered the sport certainly won’t be!
I play for Ye Olde Knowle Bowling Club. Our club started way back in 1780 (no, none of the original members still play!) and has been based in a number of locations over the years, before settling down in Dorridge for the past 20 years. When we were given notice from our previous green in 1990, the committee had one aim in mind– to keep the club together. The story of how? is one for another day (and well worth a read) but needless to say they managed it; fast forward to 2015 and we couldn’t be happier, with two county standard bowling greens, good membership and plenty of competitive matches on offer.
However, becoming self-sufficient was no easy task. Over the past 20 years we have had our fair share of trials and tribulations, being forced to respond to the new challenges facing sports clubs in the 21st century. We have seen our focus shift from day to day league and membership queries to profit and loss accounts, DBS checks, marketing and external development to name but a few.
These present day complications are where Club Matters has really helped us. I stumbled across the Club Matters website when I was looking into the Clubmark accreditation, which the Club Matters team also manage, and I am very pleased I did! The Club Matters site has clear, bite-size chunks of information on everything you need to know about how to manage and run a sustainable sports club, from finance tips to advice on how to attract more members. Nowadays, I use their site regularly and would describe myself as a ‘fan’ without doubt. I think I’ve viewed almost 90% of the content and used a large amount of it at my club. Recently, I’ve been on one of their marketing workshops which was run locally by the Club Matters team and learnt about how as a club we can market ourselves effectively. I found it so useful, I’m now looking forward to getting my teeth into some of the online modules too.
So whatever sport you represent and whatever size club, I can guarantee there will be something of benefit to you, so why not have a browse and see what Club Matters can offer you and your club…..
Thanks for stopping by….
