Tips for applying for grant funding

Below are a number of useful tips, to help you when applying for grant funding:

  • Check the priority aims of the fund are clearly aligned with the outcomes you want to achieve. Find a fund that fits your project rather than creating a project to fit a funding opportunity.
  • Read any pre application information/guidance and the application form before you start writing.
  • Check you meet the eligibility criteria before you start to write your application.
  • Be needs led and use evidence but make sure this is proportionate to the level of funding you are applying for.
  • Where possible do not make assumptions or be unrealistic. Consider using SMART (Specific, Measurable, Agreed, Realistic, Time bound) targets.
  • Consider how your project will be sustainable in the long term (once the funding ends).
  • Provide a detailed breakdown of costs and ensure these are as accurate as possible, consider your VAT position.
  • Be clear if funding is required for additional activity or to cover existing costs. Some funds will only be able to cover additional activity.
  • Funders are likely to do their research on you so make sure your social media accounts or website are up to date and showcase what you’ve told the funder about your organisation.
  • If possible, speak to the funder before you start your application to fully understand the funding available. When completing your application be sure to contact helplines if you have any questions.
  • Don’t rush your application and leave it to the last minute.
  • Be concise and clear in your application form, you don’t need to write loads, i.e. funders will not need to read about the benefits of physical activity in general, they will want to hear about your project, target audience and how it’ll meet their needs and priorities.
