How Club Matters helped kick start our Boxing Club
Tell us a bit about your club:Lee-Jones-Amateur-Boxing (1)

Our Club, Lee Jones ABC, was the forefront of the Liverpool boxing scene for many years until during the 90s the club closed due to the collapse of the club’s structure. At the start of 2015 myself and my cousin wanted to reopen the boxing club as we felt there was nothing available for people who wanted to get into boxing in our local area. We got in touch with the League of Welldoers charity (that previously housed the club before it closed) about re-establishing the club back to its former glory. After numerous conversations, all the hard work paid off and the club reopened our doors in September 2015. Our boxing club is inclusive of everybody regardless of age and abilities.

Why did you want to attend a Club Matters workshop?

We really needed support in setting up a sports Club as I haven’t set one up before, I came across the Club Matters website and found they were delivering workshops on various topics. Our main development focus was creating a strong structure to keep the Club sustainable and implementing formal procedures on how the Club is run for when new volunteers join in the future.

Did you learn anything from the workshops and has this effected your Club?

Lee Jones ABC

We have managed to attend all the Club Matters workshops except business planning. After attending all the workshops, they have put me on the right track to re-start our Club and keep it sustainable to prevent it closing down again.

We have learnt really important topics that we didn’t initially think about for example our liability and risk. From the workshops we were able to make sure appropriate training of our volunteers and coaches were in place as well as ensuring we had the correct type of insurance to cover us.

We are currently finishing off a business plan, whereby we plan to gain the Clubmark accreditation to show the potential our Club has to the community, sponsors and funders and demonstrate that we are a well-run safe Club.

Our other main development area we wanted to focus on after the workshops, was to move from our original paper based systems onto an online system which has saved us valuable time when pulling information about our Club for sponsors and funders. By doing this, we have just started our first sponsorship application!

What future plans do you have for your Club and can Club Matters support your journey any further?

We hope our sponsorship grants are successful to ensure we are able to invest in the development of our Club. We will continue to utilise the Club Matters resources in order to gain more knowledge on running a Club.
